  • Geminid Crickets...

I've been having odd animal encounters lately

Tuesday it was the little falcon

Yesterday when I opened the back door to the office I found a black cricket belly up on the threshold

    although I'm not terribly superstitious,

I've always considered it bad luck to kill a cricket.

I picked it up, it was still wigglin around a bit but one of his back legs wasn't attached correctly anymore,

brought it in and put it on my desk where he moved about pretty good for the rest of the work day.

    It was dead this morning...

It made me kinda sad though and I wondered if crickets felt pain and had I only made the poor thing miserable in it's final hours.

    so I googled it

    http://cricket-breeding.com/do-crickets-feel-pain/

It may be unlikely that crickets feel pain, but there is really no way to know for sure without becoming a cricket.  It only makes sense to do our best to treat these feeder insects with respect and consideration.

When your reptile pet gobbles up a cricket, the cricket most likely dies instantly as its body is crushed in the reptile’s mouth.  That is just a natural part of the life cycle.  Unnecessary cruelty, on the other hand, should not be encouraged or excused.

    =/

so was I respectful or cruel?

I don't know, maybe a bit of both.

    Anyway according to Earth Sky

there should be Geminid meteors shootin around the heavens

there is a bright waxing gibbous moon lighting up the peak nights of the annual Geminid meteor shower. Tonight (night of December 12-13) and tomorrow night should present a decent number of meteors. Which night is better? The forecast calls for tomorrow night (December 13-14) to be the peak night, but the moon will set earlier tonight, giving you more dark time before dawn for meteor-watching. You might see some meteors in the bright moonlight. But also take advantage of the dark predawn sky windows on Friday and Saturday mornings!

In the Northern Hemisphere, this meteor shower often rates as one of the best – if not the best – shower of the year on a dark, moonless night. You can often see up to 50 or more meteors per hour in a moonless sky.

Although the Geminids favor the Northern Hemisphere, this shower is also visible from the tropical and subtropical parts of the Southern Hemisphere. At temperate latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, the meteor numbers tend to be lower.

This Geminid meteor is seen coming straight from its radiant point, which is near the two brightest stars in Gemini, Castor and Pollux. Photo taken on the night of December 12-13, 2012 by EarthSky Facebook friend Mike O'Neal in Oklahoma. He said the 2012 Geminid meteor shower was one of the best meteor shows he's ever seen. We won't be so lucky in 2013, because the moon will be in the way.

I figure if I was respectful I'll wake up early and have clear skies

    if not.....

  • Aw, poor cricket. :-(
I think you were respectful! :-)

I believe all animals, insects, etc. feel pain. And I think a lot of animals have feelings like we do of sadness, loneliness, boredom, worry, contentment, joy...etc.

On my morning walk today I saw one lone grasshopper hopping around. I think it's getting too cold for them...so I hope he survives.

I always take two nighttime walks...one at sundown and one later before bedtime. In the Winter I just bundle up and Coops and I go walking. :-) He has a coat for Winter nights, too. :-) So, the next few nights I'll be watching the skies for meteors!

    JingleBellRockHUGS!!! :-D

  • I like crickets anywhere but in my house! We had one (never was able to find it to evict it) that was in the basement - thing would chirp so loudly you could hear it upstairs~ It was around for a long time and then one day it was just gone...

  • I've been following the meteor showers too. Haven't gotten to see any though.
I found a grasshopper on my doormat the other night... couldn't tell if he was injured or not... when I tried to see if he would hop he only acted angry so I just left him there to tend to himself. Hey, if I'm not appreciated I know when to git. lol
The cricket thing comes from asian tradition. :-) Are you asian, or just watched A Cricket in Times Square when you were growing up? (or maybe it was another movie about the sacredness of crickets?)

  • Aww. It's sweet you tried to help. Sad the cricket died the next day, but they don't live too long anyways, so perhaps it was his time; Maybe it was already old for a cricket. He can live with Jiminy now, in memory and imagination.

    Enjoy your night lights show.

  • One thing I really miss is the night time and evening sky. In fact I might just drive out of the city tonight to have a look. Thanks for the post. About crickets I will not comment except to say that I used to find them in my shoes every morning when I lived on the farm.

  • I cannot abide a cricket. I don't know why, but they just creep me out! Especially the ones that can fly!! Eww, it makes me shudder tothink of it!So, I've killed them, but be assured that it is a quick death!

  • Um, your comment section has become educational, letting us know to check our shoes before stepping into them if ever staying at a farm. Thanks Vexations. I'll only be a little icked out by that thought. There are surely worse things one could find in their shoes.

  • I believed your cricket is called in French " grillon" :https://www.google.fr/search?q=grillon+noir&hl=fr&rlz=1T4GGHP_frFR539FR539&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=uyqsUqznAqeQ0AX4oYCwCQ&ved=0CDQQsAQ&biw=1440&bih=638&dpr=1
Those orthoptreraes love the warmth of the house and in the past they located in the ancient fireplaces.

  • It was kind to keep the cricket near on the desk. :-)

  • ChristmasCookieHUGS today!!!
    :-D

  • Insects are fascinating. I think if we smash them we need to do it quickly. :-) I have had crickets in the house and drive me batty with their chirping.

Interesting about the meteors. We used to call them shooting stars. Sometimes it seems there are so many interesting things and so little time to enjoy or study them.

  • RoastedChestnutHUGS today!!!
