Bee Careful

Honeybees have thrived for 50 million years,
each colony 40 to 50,000 individuals coordinated in amazing harmony.
So why, seven years ago, did colonies start dying en masse?
Marla Spivak reveals four reasons which are interacting with tragic consequences.
This is not simply a problem because bees pollinate a third of the world’s crops.
Could this incredible species be holding up a mirror for us?

One of our Texas cousins keeps bees, it's more work than you'd think, well more than I though anyway
she also keeps goats and chickens
so what do you get if you have honey, goats milk and eggs?
The best Ice Cream in the Lone Star State
and lots of company.
Happy Autumn to You All

A guy who used to live down my street used to have chickens for eggs. I wish I had seen the chickens and experienced gathering their eggs, but oh well.
It sure would be nice to have your own-grown eggs!
We had laying chickens for awhile when I was growing up...fresh eggs are way more than nice, they are eggsceptional
home made (grown? brewed?) honey tastes so much better than the store bought honey. We are so partial to it.
local honey is suppose to help with allergies...I like it best right out of the comb, then I eat the comb like it was chewing gum...I think you gather honey..very carefully
The Angels baseball game was delayed -- twice -- the other day by a swarm of bees on the field! I was glad to hear that, though, as it means perhaps the bees are coming back.
I saw that on one of the u-tube things...I wonder how they finally got the bees to leave?
my hubby was a phone man and he said when he opened a box once he found a swarm of bees here in Tx.
those fire ants are bad,too
I had a great uncle (now passed) that used to raise bees in his back yard. The honeycomb was delicious.
We buy eggs from a family at church who raises chickens. We buy honey from a local farmer. I saw more bees this last summer than usual. At least I've never seen the African kind here. They are Mean! A lot of people get bees and wasps mixed up.
This is so interesting! One of my BIL's in Texas has has kept bees for years. And the honey is yummy!

I would like to try that ice cream! Please!
"Busy as bees"...they do work hard and we benefit from their work!
Remember being a "Do Bee" or a "Don't Bee"??!!
Well, bee good or bee good at it!
HUGS!!!
Bees are fascinating. I love their wiggle waggle dance...
Our neighbors, when I was growing up, kept bees. That was the BEST honey!!!
I have a friend whose husband is studying amphibians - kind of on the same "canary in a coal mine" line of thinking. We'll see if we've pushed things too far eh?
I had honeybees visit my garden this year. We have had fantastic results creating some wildness in our yard.
My neighbor kept bees so I grew up accustomed to swarms of honey bees. I got stung once though on the eye lid...fat eye for a week. He sold his honey and I would see his label in the market.
Happy Autumn. And happy bees.

I am glad I'm not allergic to bees because I used to get stung so much when I was a kid.
That ice cream sounds good, what was that address again?
Chimicals and machinism are going to kill the bees and us in the same time !! But I think more and more people are searching a more biological agriculture . But is is hard to fight the big chemical companies.
Keep hope for our friends the bees , Marsha .
By the way do not you work like a bee ?

My husband's parents used to have beehives. One time his sister knocked one over with the mower. She drove the mower right into the shallow water of the pond and dove in!
Yes, without bees we might have a whole lot more work to do! Maybe congress could do it so they'd stay out of our hair!
I don't think that would actually work but it's a thought.
Perhaps they are tired off having theyr honey stolen by us....or, perhaps they are on strike.
I have heard some tire warnings about the bee population shrinking badly.
Marsha , you have a soul mate about meteors :

My father kept bees when we were kids. We, thankfully were not allergic to their stings, and we all loved the honey. It is a serious problem indeed that bees are dying.
I forgot to say last time that the second panoramic photo was very peaceful and suggestive/ I like it.
