Today is my sister Mary Sue's Birthday!!!!!!!!
(a.k.a. shellisland: )
it's also
World Turtle Day

surely named in her honor
I'm pretty sure she was a Tortoise in a former life
In mythology
the Tortoise was the symbol of wisdom, and is able to defend itself on it own.
It personifies water, moon, mother earth, time, immortality and fertility.
Creation is associated with the tortoise and it is also believed that
the tortoise bears the burden of the whole world.
Yeah
that's my sister in a turtle shell

Hey Sister
I Love You More and I Miss You!
in the real world I'm off work tomorrow thru Tuesday
Saturday our Granddaughter

graduates from High School
she'll be heading to West Georgia University in August
with a full academic sholarship
and it's not too far from home
I'm so stinkin proud of her!
Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day
I'll be raising the flag for those who gave all

"When great trees fall,
rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.
When great souls die,
the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.
Great souls die and
our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.
And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.”
~ Maya Angelou

it's been a long week
and it ain't over yet
be safe where ever you are

"The longer I live, the more I realize
the impact of attitude on life. Attitude
to me, is more important than facts. It is
more important than the past, than
education, than money, than circumstances,
than failures, than successes, than what
other people think, or say or do.
It is more important than appearance,
giftedness, or skill. It will make or break
a company, a church...a home.
The remarkable thing is that we have a
choice every day regarding the attitude
we will embrace for that day.
We cannot change our past...we cannot
change the fact that people will act in a
certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the
one string we have, and that is our attitude...
I am convinced that life is 10% what
happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
And so it is with you...we are in charge
of our attitudes."
~ Charles R. Swindoll
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend

I've had iris's on my desk for 3 weeks now
am I lucky or what

Over the rainbow

I looked, unsuccessfully, for rainbows Sunday when the sun came out briefly
I can't remember the last time it's rained hard for days on end
but yesterday there was a brief break in the clouds
the sun came out for about 10 minutes
at just the right time in the afternoon
and I wanted to share rainbows with everyone
songoftheheart asked specifically
the pictures don't do the rainbows justice
but trust me they were magnificent

looking out the kitchen window

it was the best rainbow I remember ever seeing
a double

if I'd gone to the top of the ridge I could have seen both ends
maybe I would have found the proverbial pot of gold
however I was more than happy with the view from the kitchen
and I didn't get my feet wet

this isn't a blue bird
it's a male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak
and I really need to clean windows

this is a google image
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NixrHvecZ8c
and a Youtube video
they migrate through our area in the spring and fall
I think we have a couple of breeding pairs
life is good
it's all good

Cinco de Mayo

my next cold beverage is in your honor

I am not at the beach
I'm home and it's been raining
on and off
but the sun has come out
I'm off to look for a rainbow

I caught my first trout Monday

Barry caught two so we had enough for supper

although I haven't caught them before
I've dressed many - trout are the easiest fish to clean

help me!!!!!

to late for you little fishes
usually we grill them but since there were only three
I just dusted them with cornmeal and flour and cayenne pepper
and fried em up in a skillet

bubble bubble bubble
I threw in a few potatoes too

yesterday Nash and I dug up some worms
and tried our luck again

Nash's Mom Tiffany caught a sun perch
Nash reeled it in and we let it go

she caught a trout also, I caught two more
we ate them last night

I've got the fever now, so I'm going home and try it again
Have a Great Weekend
***************
you should go and tell

his Mom dingdongdingbat said it was
evidently she made him a cake too

I feel like the White Rabbit today,
I'm late, I'm late for some very important dates...
The predicted peak for the 2013 Lyrid meteor shower was before dawn today (April 22),
however you might see meteors before dawn tomorrow, if unlike me you look at the right time.
The best time, according to the almanac, is after the moon sets and before the sun comes up.
Some have gotten great pictures and shared them on the EarthSky facebook site
this is my favorite:

this image was taken in the small hours of the morning April 22 by
Simon Waldram, around 5 am.
Camera used was a sony a580 with a minolta 24mm prime lens
30 seconds exposure f2.8 iso 1600.
Can I just say I'm terribly jealous of Simon
meteors and windmills, what more could you wish for.

well....
I did receive this virtual bouquet from a friend this morning
and a nice email note that said:
"Hey Marsha! I picked some flowers this morning and threw them in a roofless birdhouse beside me
and I said 'you know who would enjoy that?!'
Hope you're wonderful and enjoying this long overdue brightness.
Blessings,"
it totally made me happy and how appropriate for Earth Day

Arbor Day at N.Y. Public School #4, 173rd St. & Fulton Ave., New York. Year unknown. Photo via Library of Congress.
The date of Earth Day, April 22, stems from an earlier observance, Arbor Day.
J. Sterling Morton was a Nebraska pioneer,
a writer and editor for Nebraska’s first newspaper, and later secretary of the Nebraska Territory.
He advocated planting trees in what was then a dusty and treeless prairie.
At a meeting of the State Board of Agriculture in January 1872,
Morton proposed that Nebraska citizens set aside April 10 as a day to plant trees.
It’s said that Nebraskans planted about one million trees on that first Arbor Day in 1872.
Ten years later, in 1882, Nebraska declared Arbor Day as a legal holiday and the date was changed to Morton’s birthday, April 22.
Arbor Day grew to become a national observance and is now observed in Nebraska on the last Friday in April,
which is also when National Arbor Day is observed.
It seemed natural to schedule April 22, 1970 – Arbor Day – as the first Earth Day.

I recall the first Earth Day
and Bangs -
We were all hippies back in the day
The first Earth Day marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement.
Approximately 20 million Americans, especially on college campuses, participated in a national teach-in on
environmental issues and protests against environmental deterioration on the first Earth Day.
It’s hard to imagine it now, but the first Earth Day was a revelation to many,
a way not only of raising consciousness about environmental issues but also of bringing together
separate groups that had been fighting separately against issues including oil spills,
pollution from factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, the loss of wilderness,
air pollution and more.
Since then, Earth Day is always celebrated on April 22.

So...
are you wondering about the title of this blog?
wonder no more
for the last 3 years my grandson Nash and I have been making up a song, to pass the time while we mow
it's pretty much complete now, Nash has gotten to big to ride the mower with me

without further ado
I give you...
The Creek Song
lyrics by Nash and Ma Moon
I think you and me

outta sing a song about our family
Mamma and Daddy
and Big Ole Moon
Anna and Sarah
and Reece and Mara
Oh I think we
are family
Oh
I think you and me
outta sing a song about the creek
mowin the grass and pickin up rocks
countin the flowers and the poly-wogs
Oh
I think we
are family
Oh
I think you and me
outta sing a song about the things we see
the moon coming up
the sun going down
the stars coming out
the world goin round
Oh
I think we
are family
I love you I love you I doooo
