  • 1954

The Godfather, aka  http://godfatherofgreenbay.xanga.com/, is trying to get us Xangans to be more community-ish by doing an old survey he dug out of his archives.  I thought it was interesting and I learned some things about the stone age in the process :)

List  notable news events from the year you were born:

Geneva Conference is convened to bring peace to Vietnam. The country is divided at the 17th parallel, pending democratic elections.

In Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka the Supreme Court  unanimously bans racial segregation in public schools (May 17).

First atomic submarine the Nautilus launched (Jan. 21).

Dr. Jonas Salk starts inoculating children against Polio.

     William Faulkner's " A Fable"  wins Pulitzer.

List  TV shows  from the year you were born:

List   popular songs from the year you were born:

1 Rock Around The Clock Bill Haley & His Comets
2 Shake, Rattle And Roll Joe Turner / Bill Haley & His Comets
    3 Earth Angel Penguins
    4 Sh-Boom Chords
5 That's All Right Elvis Presley with Scotty and Bill

List a video game from the year you were born:

There were no video games in 1954 =/

List a car from the year you were born:

1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 Single-Seater, which  broke the following auction world records:

    • Most valuable motor car ever sold at auction
    • Most valuable Formula 1 racing car ever sold
    • Most valuable Mercedes-Benz

List a movie from the year you were born:

    On the Waterfront

    Best PictureOn the Waterfront

Best DirectorElia Kazan - On The Waterfront

Best ActorMarlon Brando - On the Waterfront

Best Supporting ActressEva Marie Saint - On The Waterfront

A notable political figure from the year you were born:

    President Dwight Eisenhower

supposedly made the following statement on November 8, 1954:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

In addition to being a war hero, a decent fellow, a moderate Republican before they began to go extinct, President Eisenhower apparently was also quite the prophet. Little George W. Bush was about 9 years old at the time...

according to snopes he actually penned these thoughts in a letter to  his brother Edgar Newton Eisenhower on the above mentioned date.

List 5 TV characters you’d like to get nasty with:

Walt Disney - Walt Disneys Wonderful World of Color

Robert Young - Father Knows Best

James Dean - Pepsi Commercial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA6QGLSuDuU

Red Skelton - The Red Skelton Hour

Jack Lemmon - The Road of Life

I will add here that I'm a monogamist, but if I weren't it would be pretty Nasty and Illegal because all these guys are dead now =/

There ya go....I'm feelin all communityish now =)

p.s.  President Eisenhower may have been a wonderful man but it's not nice to call people stupid,

as Forest would say forty years later:

    "Stupid is as Stupid Does"

  • Oh what a world, What a world

     it was quite the weekend

1.) Barry and Nash weren't home when I got home Friday, and when they got home they had another vehicle =/

a Red Ford Ranger - I think this makes about 16 vehicles in the yard now.

    nashs zinna

2.) Nash planted a sunflower seed at Mission Friends back in July

and a red Zinnia grew forth - talk about your miracles :)

3.) I broke a belt on the lawnmower and the vacuum cleaner.

4.) Walmart and Home Depot did not have the replacement belts.

5.)  I put the wrong key in the ignition switch at Home Depot and although it would turn the motor over

the car would not crank....and the key would not come out for over an hour.  A cute young boy said he could fix it,

he got in the car and tried to start it up, I told him he had to mash in the clutch and he said Clutch? which ones the Clutch? =/

So he went and got his friend who drove a stick and he got the key out, the car started perfectly with the correct key...

FYI - if you have an extra key made for your honda at the hardware store it will open the doors but it will not crank the car, those keys cost about

    a million bucks.

6.) On the way home a Deer ( not Dear) jumped off a hill and ran smack into the side of the Honda, knocked the side mirror slap off the car,

not to mention denting the only place on the car that wasn't already dented...

it was dark and I was upset so I did not stop and check on the deer, but it was gone the next morning...

    7.) Church was GREAT

8.) A kind person asked if I wanted green beans from  his garden and I said "Why Yes I Love Green Beans"

he brought me a bushel - you ever strung and snapped a bushel of green beans? I takes a long time,

I worked them up during the Falcons Saints game...that didn't work out for the Falcons very well.

9.) while I was at Walmart I bought the last pair of flip flops in my size for a buck...

    and the dogs ate them.

I guess that's enough information...unless you want to hear about the plumbing problems I had

and I'm not talking about the toilet sinks or bathtub....tmi for sure

The good part is I made it to today...

Here's some pictures I took on the way back from Texas last week.

     on the road again

This news makes me so very sad:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Linda Ronstadt says she suffers from Parkinson’s disease, which has robbed her ability to sing.

The 67-year-old music legend tells AARP Magazine, in an article posted online Friday, that she was diagnosed eight months ago and “can’t sing a note.”

Ronstadt says she began to show symptoms as long as eight years ago, but attributed her inability to sing then to a tick disease. When her hands began to tremble, Ronstadt said she thought the shaking was the result of a shoulder operation.

She said she was “completely shocked” when she finally saw a neurologist and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. “I wouldn’t have suspected that in a million, billion years.

“No one can sing with Parkinson’s disease,” Ronstadt told AARP music writer Alanna Nash. “No matter how hard you try.”

  • In spite of ourselves

We're back from the wedding celebration

    Bryants and Walshs

    the venue

if your ever in Purcellville Virginia you should go

    wine tasting at the winery

well, except for Aaron and he's drinking beer from a red solo cup

    sisters

looking at the Walsh's front porch

looking at the vineyard from the front porch

    the winery

    it's solar powered

    nieces and nephews drank wine

    grandkids didn't drink - much

some wore funny hats and played with very large tennis balls

there is just nothing like a porch swing

or the folks who occupy them

back view of the wedding dress

the bride and groom sang together beautifully

    mostly John Prine songs

it was a magical week and I fully intend to blog about the whole trip

lest I forget one single moment

    cool

but first I have to prepare for an annual board meeting and two audits at work

    whatevah

    I'll be back around asap

    life is good

    heart

    it's all good

    "In spite of ourselves"

original music by John Prine & Iris DeMent

as sung by Nate and Sarah

    Nate:
She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby, I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go

    Sarah:
He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
Caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby, I'm his honey
I'm never gonna let him go

    Everyone:

    In spite of ourselves

    We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow

    Against all odds

Honey, we're the big door prize

    We're gonna spite our noses

    Right off of our faces

There won't be nothin' but big old hearts

    Dancin' in our eyes.

  • “If only…”

We'll be leaving soon for our kids Sarah and Nate's wedding celebration,

Georgia to Virginia in 10 hours, unless I drive then it will take a few many hours more, I like to take the back roads, where people don't drive like their running the Daytona or Talladega or I-75 Super Speedways,

anyway I liked the title of this post, these are some really important life lessons and make me think....

If only I'd started that diet in January clueless

I'll be back in a week...

your going to miss me...you know you are

but mark your calendar so you don't miss the 2013 Perseids make their return on the nights of August 11-12 and 12-13.

    Perseid meteor over Iran
A Perseid meteor zips over Iran's Alamut Valley during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower in August 2012.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks this year when there's almost no Moon, affording a dark sky for late-night shooting-star spectators and counters. A thick waxing crescent Moon sets in mid-evening, so it will offer little interference for this year's event.

    "If Only"

These two words paired together create one of the saddest phrases in the English language.

Here are ten choices that ultimately lead to this phrase of regret, and how to elude them:

    1. Wearing a mask to impress others. – If the face you always show the world is a mask, someday there will be nothing beneath it.  Because when you spend too much time concentrating on everyone else’s perception of you, or who everyone else wants you to be, you eventually forget who you really are.  So don’t fear the judgments of others; you know in your heart who you are and what’s true to you.  You don’t have to be perfect to impress and inspire people.  Let them be impressed and inspired by how you deal with your imperfections.
    2. Letting someone else create your dreams for you. – The greatest challenge in life is discovering who you are; the second greatest is being happy with what you find.  A big part of this is your decision to stay true to your own goals and dreams.  Do you have people who disagree with you?  Good.  It means you’re standing your ground and walking your own path.  Sometimes you’ll do things considered crazy by others, but when you catch yourself excitedly losing track of time, that’s when you’ll know you’re doing the right thing.
    3. Keeping negative company. – Don’t let someone who has a bad attitude give it to you.  Don’t let them get to you.  They can’t pull the trigger if you don’t hand them the gun.  When you remember that keeping the company of negative people is a choice, instead of an obligation, you free yourself to keep the company of compassion instead of anger, generosity instead of greed, and patience instead of anxiety.
    4. Being selfish and egotistical. – A life filled with loving deeds and good character is the best tombstone.  Those who you inspired and shared your love with will remember how you made them feel long after your time has expired.  So carve your name on hearts, not stone.  What you have done for yourself alone dies with you; what you have done for others and the world remains...
    5. Avoiding change and growth. – If you want to know your past look into your present conditions.  If you want to know your future look into your present actions.  You must let go of the old to make way for the new; the old way is gone, never to come back.  If you acknowledge this right now and take steps to address it, you will position yourself for lasting success.  The Power of Habit.
    6. Giving up when the going gets tough. – There are no failures, just results.  Even if things don’t unfold the way you had expected, don’t be disheartened or give up.  Learn what you can and move on.  The one who continues to advance one step at a time will win in the end.  Because the battle is always won far away and long before the final victory.  It’s a process that occurs with small steps, decisions, and actions that gradually build upon each other and eventually lead to that glorious moment of triumph.
    7. Trying to micromanage every little thing. – Life should be touched, not strangled.    Sometimes you’ve got to relax and let life happen without incessant worry and micromanagement.  Learn to let go a little before you squeeze too tight.  Take a deep breath.  When the dust settles and you can once again see the forest for the trees, take the next step forward.  You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going to be headed somewhere great.  Everything in life is in perfect order whether you understand it yet or not.  It just takes some time to connect all the dots.
    8. Settling for less than you deserve. – Be strong enough to let go and wise enough to wait for what you deserve.  Sometimes you have to get knocked down lower than you have ever been to stand up taller than you ever were before.  Sometimes your eyes need to be washed by your tears so you can see the possibilities in front of you with a clearer vision again.  Don’t settle..........
    9. Endlessly waiting until tomorrow. – The trouble is, you always think you have more time than you do.  But one day you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to work on the things you’ve always wanted to do.  And at that point you either will have achieved the goals you set for yourself, or you will have a list of excuses for why you haven’t.  ......................................
    10. Being lazy and wishy-washy. – The world doesn’t owe you anything, you owe the world something.  So stop daydreaming and start DOING.  Develop a backbone, not a wishbone.  Take full responsibility for your life – take control.  You are important and you are needed.  It’s too late to sit around and wait for somebody to do something someday.  Someday is now; the somebody the world needs is YOU.
